Over 100 Hertsmere residents attended an EU debate in Potters Bar last week which was organised by Hertsmere MP, Oliver Dowden. The speaker for the Remain campaign on the evening was Robert Buckland QC MP, Member of Parliament for Swindon South and the Government's Solicitor General. The speaker for the Vote Leave campaign was Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP, Member of Parliament for Berwick upon Tweed. The debate was Chaired by Mr Dowden.
Mr Dowden said: "The is an extremely important issue. I was keen to arrange a debate with high calibre speakers on both sides of the debate so that Hertsmere residents are fully informed of all arguments.
"I was very glad that the debate was so well attended and that the quality of the speeches and questions from the audience was so high. Whilst many people in the audience were very passionate either way, I am very glad that the debate was civil and that respect was shown towards others who may hold different views.
"I was elected as the Member of Parliament for Hertsmere last May on a platform of delivering an In/Out referendum on our country's membership of the EU. I am very glad that this key pledge has been delivered and I would encourage everyone to use their vote."
The debate was held at the Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Bar.
Mr Dowden added: “I would like to thank the staff at the Wyllyotts Centre, many of whom are volunteers, for helping me organise this event.
"I hope that all those who attended, especially the undecided voters, found the debate helpful in coming to their decision on how to vote on June 23rd."
