Sir Oliver has raised concerns in the House of Commons following the announcement that Immanuel Prep, a Jewish-faith school in Bushey, will be closing at the end of this academic year.
In a statement, Immanuel College stated that this closure was driven by “growing financial pressures” brought about by the Labour Government’s decisions to introduce VAT on school fees, increase National Insurance, and remove business rates relief for private schools.
Sir Oliver, who has opposed these policies, voiced further objections and highlighted that Jewish children in and around Hertsmere would now face barriers in receiving an education which aligns with their religious beliefs.
During Topical Questions to the Secretary of State for Education, Sir Oliver asked: “Over the weekend, Immanuel Prep in my constituency announced that it was closing, citing VAT on school fees and other damaging Labour policies.
Does the Secretary of State share my concern about the damage this will do to Jewish children growing up in my constituency and the surrounding area, depriving them of access to a Jewish education which they richly deserve?”
