On Thursday evening last week Oliver joined with people from across Hertsmere in Radlett for commemorations marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2017.
Oliver said: ‘It’s so important that we as a county and a community remember and commemorate the Holocaust. I did this nationally by signing the Book of commitment in Parliament and locally I delighted to join the civic ceremony where we had moving testimony, including from survivors of more recent atrocities such as the Srebrenica massacre.
‘The candlelight procession through the centre of Radlett was a fitting and moving way of marking the day. As your local MP, I will do all I can to make sure we never forget the lessons that history has taught us.’
The theme of this year’s Memorial Day was ‘How can life go on?’ The ceremony began with a parade which passed along Watling Street before finishing at the Radlett Centre where guests listened to a number of speeches.
Holocaust Memorial Day was established following an MP’s visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau with the Holocaust Educational Trust. Following his visit, Andrew Dismore MP proposed a bill, ‘to introduce a day to learn and remember the Holocaust’ on 30 June 1999.
