You may be tired of reading about Brexit and I’ve resisted writing about it for some time. In the coming weeks though Parliament will face some crucial decisions around the process.
Opinion in Hertsmere, just as in the country, was evenly split, but just like the country we voted narrowly but decisively to leave the EU. I respect this decision and will support the delivery of our successful departure.
The EU Withdrawal Bill is crucial to achieving this. It essentially takes EU legislation and puts it into British law so that we do not have the cliff edge of no legal framework when we leave. I support it and voted for it. Over the coming weeks we’ll examine it in detail.
There will be amendments seeking to keep us in the Single Market. I oppose this. Remaining in the Single Market will mean staying subject to EU regulations and free movement of people, which were the two main concerns that people had when voting to leave.
I also oppose amendments seeking another referendum. The British people have spoken. It would create massive uncertainty if we were to vote again on the deal. I do however, think that it is important that Parliament votes on the final deal and I am glad that the Government has agreed to this.
Equally, we must make sure the rights of EU nationals in the UK and UK nationals in the EU are protected and I am glad that we have made good progress on that. I will also be seeking amendments that powers granted to the Government in the Bill are not so broad as to give excessive executive power.
Over the coming months there will be hard negotiation from both sides, but I believe we can still achieve a good deal. In scrutinising its terms and the broader process of our exit from the EU I will always be guided by the best interests of you, the people of Hertsmere.
