This month, on May 6, we turn a page in our history as we celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. I know that residents across Hertsmere will be marking this new chapter over the long weekend, coming together to celebrate this defining and momentous occasion for our country.
As we enter this new reign in our history, it is important that we pay a fitting tribute to our new sovereign. I am proud to have led the plans for this celebration in my role as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster at the Cabinet Office. The Government has announced that throughout the United Kingdom, public authorities will be able to apply for a free portrait of His Majesty the King. These new portraits will serve as a visible reminder in buildings up and down the country of the nation’s ultimate public servant.
And as we come together to celebrate this unique moment for our country, a moment of constitutional significance, we will showcase the very best of the United Kingdom across a weekend full of splendour and celebration.
I am looking forward to lots of exciting moments, including a special Coronation Concert staged and broadcast live at Windsor Castle. I know across Hertsmere, residents will be hosting Coronation Big Lunches at street parties, in their gardens and in our parks and community spaces. On the additional bank holiday marking the coronation on Monday 8 May, the ‘Big Help Out’ will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities across the nation, with events encouraging people to try volunteering for themselves to support their local areas.
I know that this promises to be a weekend to remember, during which across Hertsmere, and the United Kingdom, we come together to mark a defining moment in the long and proud history of our nation.
