This month marks the first anniversary of the barbaric 7 October attacks, when Israel suffered her worst terror attack in history.
While we grieve for the victims of 7 October, I am very concerned by the Labour Government’s decision to suspend some arms export licences to Israel just days after six hostages were murdered by Hamas.
Israel is not perfect and must be held to high standards but it is fighting a difficult war against a terrorist organisation that hides itself among the civilian population. I believe it is genuinely working as hard as it can to minimise civilian casualties in this exceptionally difficult environment.
I have grave concerns about both the signal the Labour Government’s decision sends regarding our support for Israel’s right to defend itself, and the implications of taking a divergent response to the United States, one of our closest allies. I have been steadfast in my position that we should stand foursquare behind Israel. Any suspension of arms export licenses inevitably undermines the strength of this commitment.
Please rest assured that I will continue hold the Labour Government to account to ensure that the UK continues to support Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens. As Hertsmere’s MP, I am proud to represent one of the largest Jewish communities in the country. I have always stood up for the Jewish community both in Hertsmere and beyond, and I will always defend Israel and the right of its citizens to live in peace and security. I have no doubt that all of us will be further tested in the future but I also take comfort in the strength and togetherness that the community has shown.
As we gather for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I want to pass on my best wishes to everyone entering into the festivities. This year’s celebrations will be a more solemn and reflective affair than in previous years. However, I hope you are all able to gather with family and friends during this time.
