The past month in Westminster must rate as one of the most extraordinary since the War. It began with the decision of the British people and the people of Hertsmere to vote to leave the EU. The result was close but clear. The country chose a new direction. This offers great opportunities for our country but will also come with significant challenges, particularly in the short term. As your MP, my overriding duty is now to implement this decision, to make it work and get the very best outcome for all the people of Hertsmere.
The outcome of the vote also prompted the resignation of David Cameron. In the choice of new Prime Minister, the most important issue for me was who had the necessary experience, values and leadership skills to take the country in this new direction. I believed that this ability to unite the country, and to implement the people’s decision, was more important than how they voted on Europe.
The choice also entails wider questions about the future direction of the country. I was very impressed to hear Theresa May recognise the need to build a country that works not just for a privileged few but for everyone, regardless of who they are or where they are from. These are my values too, and are exactly why I stood for election to Parliament. It is essential that in the remaining years of this Parliament we address this.
I therefore supported Theresa May. I am very confident that with her values, skills and strength of character, she has what it takes to lead our country. Whatever happens in the coming months and years, I will be guided by one thing- the best interests of you, the people who sent me to Westminster.
