Hertsmere residents have been invited to make their views known on the contents of the draft Local Plan, which sets out the borough council’s planning strategy for at least the next 15 years. 

The Local Plan establishes the number of new houses to be built over this time period, where these will be built, and the planned infrastructure to go with them. 

Like many of you, I cherish the beautiful, green open spaces which is one of the greatest pleasures of living in our part of Hertfordshire. These characterise our borough and make our towns and villages distinct and special places to live. We of course need more homes for our children and grandchildren, but this must not be at the expense of what makes our area so special. 

I know that residents will be keen to ensure that the borough council’s planning objectives are compatible with the preservation of our special surroundings. 

As well as green spaces, I have always been clear that new housing must be matched with corresponding improvements in local infrastructure and services. This consultation is an opportunity for residents to share their views on this and ensure we get the facilities we need in the locations where we need them. 

While the Local Plan, as with all individual planning decisions, is wholly a matter for the council and is not an area over which I have any authority, my priority over the coming weeks is to ensure that my constituents’ voices are heard and are properly taken into account.   

All Hertsmere residents have until the 22 November to comment on the draft plan, and I would urge everybody to do so. It is vital that your voices are heard. Now is the moment to have your say as our borough seeks to identify where it will accommodate housing and business needs for the next generation in line with its national obligations.
